Nutrition Activities

One of our lines of inquiry in our new unit, changes, is making informed choices during transitions. One of the new choices we will have to take more in middle school is choosing a healthy lunch that is balanced and nutritious. Here are two activities that our class did to learn about the importance and function of nutrition:

1- Our first activity was when our class went down to the North Cafeteria with a clipboard and piece of paper to investigate. We would observe all of the choices that the cafeteria offers and we create a plate on our piece of paper. The first plate is our dream plate! So on this plate, you would put a bunch of options that you would eat for lunch if you didn't have to worry about fats, sugars, carbs or any unhealthy nutrient. The second plate was going to be a lunch that you would think would be a healthy lunch/plate. Almost everyone had to re-think their healthy plate after doing our second activity, which I will get to in a minute. I think this activity let us explore our sense of self through nutrition and food and learn about choices we are going to have to make next year. Here is my dream plate and my "Thought it was healthy" plate.

2- Then, after the first activity, we went back up to the classroom and discussed our plates. After this, we watched a BrainPOP video on nutrition and took the quiz. The reason for this activity was to learn about what a balanced and healthy plate would look like and not just guessing randomly. After taking the quiz and watching the video, we had to reflect on our 'Thought it was Healthy' plate. Now that we have more knowledge on nutrition and what a healthy and balanced diet is, we asked ourselves; Is this really a healthy plate? So for homework, we had to watch the video again, but then create a NEW plate about a true healthy and balanced diet. Here is a screenshot of my results and a picture of my NEW healthy plate.
